Representational Systems
Representational systems (or sensory modalities) are based on a Neuro Linguistic Programming model that examines how the mind processes information. In the model, information is processed through our minds (brain/nervous systems) and that information is filtered (deleted, distorted and generalised) in such a way to make it more meaningful to us. Through our minds we make an internal representation of that information which is based on pictures (visual), sounds (auditory) or feelings (kinesthetic), as well as smells and tastes. Those experiences are then labelled with our own internal dialogue commonly called “self talk” (auditory digital). Knowing a client's primary representational system can help the coach understand which style of learning/teaching is most suitable to that client. Their primary representational system is, in effect, their preferred learning style. It is often a useful exercise to undertake with a new client to establish the optimal coaching style and tools/techniques to use in order to get the best results for that client. Our Mentor(s) will walk you through the coaching process of determining a client's Representational System...
