Phobias
A phobia is a particualr type of habitual fear. It is an anxiety disorder which can be repeatedly triggered by certain situations or objects. Although it is a psychological phenomenum, It can have major physiological effects including rapid heart rate, increase sweating, dryness of the mouth, heightened senses, inability to think or move, and even fainting. Phobias can be divided into specific phobias and social phobia. The most common specific phobias include fear of spiders/snakes/dogs, fear of the water, fear of enclosed spaces, fear of the dark and fear of heights. They are often initiated in chiildhood due to a negative experience with the particular object or situation. Social phobia's include fear of public speaking, fear of standing out, fear of crowds, and fear of being judged or ridiculed. Both specific and social phobias can be coached, although if the phobia is particulary chronic or severe, it is recommended to refer the client to a qualified professional such as a clinical psychologist.
